About Me
Doctor of Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Functional medicine, CBT, CST, diet and lifestyle coach
Hello I am Dr. Risha Sharma, Ayurvedic physician, naturopath, functional medicine practitioner and founder of Wishfulhealing Clinic, Chandigarh.
For the past 11 years, I have had the privilege of working directly with individuals across the globe, with a special focus on children on the autism spectrum and their families.
Through consultations, personalized support programs, and collaborative efforts in diverse cultural and geographic settings, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges many face, including gastrointestinal issues that often accompany autism. These real-world experiences have deepened my understanding of how the trillions of microbes in our gut—collectively known as the gut microbiome—play a pivotal role far beyond digestion.
Emerging research continues to illuminate the gut-brain axis: the bidirectional communication pathway linking our intestinal microbes to brain function, behavior, and neurodevelopment. Studies show that children with autism frequently exhibit distinct microbiome profiles,..

I hear you — and I love that you want to dig deeper.
My goal with this page has always been simple: make real science on autism and gut health accessible for parents, caregivers, and our community — without needing a PhD to understand it.
The full research literature is huge, often technical, and sometimes locked behind paywalls. That’s why I break it down into clear, practical insights here.
That said, the connection between the gut microbiome and autism spectrum traits is backed by solid evidence, including multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
These show consistent differences in gut bacteria composition in many individuals with ASD, along with growing understanding of the gut-brain axis — how microbes, inflammation, and metabolites can influence GI symptoms and behavior.

1. The “Protein First” Rule
Protein is the building block of neurotransmitters. Specifically, it provides the amino acid tyrosine, which is essential for dopamine production—the very thing ADHD brains often lack.
• The Hack: Eat protein for breakfast. This prevents the mid-morning brain fog that leads to “doom scrolling” or task paralysis.
• Best Sources: Eggs, Greek yogurt, lean meats, or a high-quality protein shake if you have “morning executive dysfunction.”
2. Prioritize Omega-3 Fatty Acids
About 60% of your brain is fat. Omega-3s (specifically EPA and DHA) are crucial for cell-to-cell signaling. Some studies indicate that people with ADHD have lower blood levels of these fats.
• The Hack: Aim for “SMASH” fish (Salmon, Mackerel, Anchovies, Sardines, Herring) or a high-dose algae/fish oil supplement.
• The Result: Improved focus and slightly reduced impulsivity over time.
3. Manage the “Glucose Rollercoaster”
Simple sugars and refined carbs cause a rapid spike in blood glucose, followed by a massive insulin drop. For an ADHD brain, that “crash” feels like total cognitive shutdown.
• The Hack: Follow the “Fiber First” principle. Eat your veggies or a handful of nuts before you eat the pasta or dessert. Fiber slows sugar absorption, keeping your energy (and focus) linear rather than erratic.
4. Watch for “Triggers”
While it doesn’t affect everyone, some people with ADHD are hyper-sensitive to certain additives that can increase hyperactivity.
• Artificial Dyes: Red 40 and Yellow 5 are the most commonly cited culprits in behavioral sensitivity.

Think of your microbiome as a garden.
You aren’t just eating for calories; you’re “gardening” for your mental health.
Every fermented food or fiber-rich vegetable is a seed planted for a clearer, happier mind.
The 95% Serotonin 🤫
You might think of serotonin—the “feel-good” hormone—as a brain chemical. In reality, about 95% of your body’s serotonin is produced in your gut. Improving your gut health can have a direct, measurable impact on your emotional resilience and overall mood.

Did you know ??
your child’s gut is often called their “second brain”? The Gut-Brain Axis is a two-way communication highway linked by the vagus nerve and biochemical signals. When the gut is happy, the brain is focused, calm, and ready to learn. Here is how our three superstar fruits support this vital connection:
• Blueberries: These “brain berries” are packed with anthocyanins. Beyond their antioxidant power, they actually cross the blood-brain barrier. In the gut, they act as prebiotics, fueling “good” bacteria that produce BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), a protein essential for memory and learning.
• Amla (Indian Gooseberry): This Vitamin C powerhouse is a stress-buster. High levels of Pb (lead) or Cd (cadmium) can cause neurotoxicity and gut inflammation. Amla’s unique tannins help chelate these metals, preventing them from traveling from the gut to the brain, while stabilizing mood-regulating neurotransmitters.
• Papaya: Better digestion equals a better mood. Papaya contains papain, an enzyme that breaks down proteins efficiently. A sluggish gut often leads to “brain fog” and irritability in kids. By ensuring smooth digestion, papaya prevents the buildup of toxic byproducts that can cloud a child’s mental clarity.
Feed the gut, fuel the mind! 🫐🌿🧡
